A study in the journal Environmental International has found that air pollution can harm embryo development in IVF cycles. Issues stem from both maternal and paternal exposure to outdoor air pollution. Specifically, exposure to organic carbon, which is emitted from cars and wildfires, negatively impacts fertilization, survival, and embryo quality. (Emory University)
Severe challenges – like abuse or poverty – can significantly impact teenage brain development. Researchers have found that these experiences can cause delayed development in certain brain regions linked to a higher risk of substance abuse and mental health disorders. A natural chemical in seawater, called boron, becomes toxic in drinking water when processed through conventional salt-removing filters. Thankfully, a new technology has been shown to efficiently remove boron. The device can cut costs by up to 15 percent, saving about seven billion dollars a year. Researchers hope this will help make seawater a more accessible source of drinking water. The work is published in the journal Nature Water. (University of Michigan)
