Not every place we spend time in is about productivity or privacy. These places, the ones tucked between home and work, are what sociologists refer to as a “third space.”

They’re the libraries, parks, community centers and other free or low-cost places where people show up to get out of the house and feel more connected. But over the last several years, these spots have been dwindling. Many public libraries and recreations centers have been forced to close or scale back their operations due to budget cuts. At the same time, many independent cafes and restaurants that were neighborhood hubs have gone out of business. Some have been replaced by fast-casual chains, but often these spots aren’t designed for people to linger and stay awhile.

For certain groups, these changes have a bigger impact. For older adults, these ‘third spaces’ fill in the social gaps that happen through retirement or by living alone. These spots are also vital for individuals or families on a tight budget. Free or low-cost community resources like libraries and rec centers offer reliable access to wi-fi and are a safe place to meet up.

And research shows that these ‘third spaces’ play an important role. According to the centers for disease control and prevention, social isolation increases dementia risk by 50 percent and is linked to higher rates of heart disease, stroke, and depression. When these places disappear, so do many of the casual, everyday connections that improve quality of life.
