Welcome to Culture Crash, where we examine American culture – what’s new and old in entertainment…
Harry Styles has been famous since he was a teenager, traveling the world as a member of One Direction and then launching his solo career. On his own, he’s managed to hit stratospheric heights across a number of endeavors. He won the Grammy for Album of the Year for his 2022 album Harry’s House, acted in several films including the 2017 Best Picture nominee Dunkirk, and even completed the Berlin Marathon in less than 3 hours.
Now 32 years old, Styles just released his fourth solo album, called “Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally,” which sees the mega-celeb dealing with fame, yes, but also more common concerns like going through a breakup, being reached out to by an ex, and watching his friends settle down with, apparently, American girls.
But what this album seems most intent on is making its listeners dance, with Styles sounding freer than ever and exploring new electronic dance soundscapes and influences such as LCD Soundsystem. To celebrate its release, Styles recorded a live performance of the album and released it on Netflix. The concert film, “One Night in Manchester” showcases both the natural charisma of a leading man who has been touring the world for 15 years and the musical collaboration it takes to create the balanced groove of “Ready, Steady, Go” or the triumphant finale on “Carla’s Song.” After listening to the album a few times through, I keep finding myself drawn to the electropop longing on “Season 2 Weight Loss” as well as the sassy confidence of “Taste Back.”
On the whole, the album Kiss All The Time, Disco Occassionally is fun, fizzy pop full of funky bass lines and driving drum beats that showcase a new side of Harry Styles as an artist, and can be easily enjoyed on a night out, a hard run, or a simple Sunday catching up on chores around the house. Works for me!
