Culture Crash: From Kurosawa Remakes To Stephen King Revivals: The Fall Film Lineup

Now that we’re into the dog days of summer, the fall movie slate is taking shape. The blockbusters or would-be blockbusters are largely behind us, and fall film festival season is taking over the movie landscape. And there’s great news on that front: the rest of 2025 is loaded with exciting movies from talented filmmakers.

For example, on August 22, film lovers can see the new movies from both Spike Lee and Ethan Coen. Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest is a reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low starring Denzel Washington and Jeffrey Wright, while Coen’s Honey Don’t is a dark comedy neo-noir starring Margaret Qualley, Aubrey Plaza, and Chris Evans. The next week, Darren Aronofsky’s Caught Stealing will hit theaters starring Austin Butler, Regina King, and Zoe Kravitz in an action crime thriller set in 1990s New York. 

The movie I’m maybe most excited for is One Battle After Another, an action thriller from Paul Thomas Anderson starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Regina Hal, Chase Infiniti, and Benicio del Toro. But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t also excited about The Long Walk and The Running Man, two angry, dark action thrillers based on books Stephen King published under his Richard Bachman pseudonym in 1979 and 1982, respectively. And we’re also set for duelling Safdie brother movies: Benny Safdie’s The Smashing Machine stars Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, while Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme stars Timothee Chalamet.

2025 will also see Jeremy Allen White play Bruce Springsteen in Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere, a new Yorgos Lanthimos movie called Bugonia, Kathryn Bigelow’s return to the directing chair for a political thriller called A House of Dynamite, Kelly Reichardt’s heist movie The Mastermind with Josh O’Connor and Alana Haim, and a new Avatar movie.

2025 has been an encouragingly good time at the movies, and with a slate full of exciting filmmakers and potential movie stars fighting for our attention, I’m confident some of the best this year has to offer is still on its way.
